LIIAR Analysis Of Existing Magazines
I have chosen one music magazine to analyze from my chosen genre. This analysis will be done of the front cover, contents page and double page spread.
Front Page
L-The language for this magazine is suitable and legible. The title is in big, bold lettering which makes it easy for a young child (or anyone) to read. This is therefore going to be more attractive to the reader as reading the magazine wont be a challenge. They have again used imagery within the title by filling in the 'O'. 'For your eyes only' is placed in the top left hand corner, just above the title. The wording makes the audience believe that they are in the minority to find out this information, making it more likely that they will buy the magazine again, as they won't be able to find the information anywhere else. All of the feature stories' pull quotes are eye catching and make you want to read that article. The text that they use for this is slightly larger than the rest so it drags the audience's eye to it. They don't tell the full story, but will pull out certain parts that they deem to be interesting or exciting so the reader buys the magazine. They also is a little not from the editor of the magazine down the left hand side of the page, this is so either the reader or parent has a little background information on the magazine and the people that work for it. The type for most of the writing on this page is very plain and simple, it is easy to read and doesn't need a fancy font to make the content interesting. For the actual contents eg. page numbers, they have put the numbers in a yellow larger text, so that they stand out and the reader can find what page they want straight away. Page numbers are also on the main feature photo and the other features stories as well.
I- On the contents page, there is no recognition of the publishing company. This is probably because they feel it is not needed as it is on the front cover. Even though they do not have the name of the actual company, they have placed the website for this magazine at the bottom right hand corner. When you go to this website, they will have a link to the publishing companies website.
I- We can see from this contents page that the values and beliefs of the We Love Pop magazine are based around pop culture, such as teen heart throbs, fashion and celebrities gossip. This is shown by the multiple photos of young male and female artists that would be popular with the audience of this magazine. You can also tell from this page that appearance is important within pop culture as all of the celebrities in the photos are made up and we can guess that they will have a lot of make up (even the males). Magazines would not usually post pictures of celebrities with no make up on and in there joggers, as it doesn't create a glamorous image of them. They want the audience to believe that this is what they look like all of them time (make up, hair done, happy faces), but at a certain age we realize that this isn't the case. This is why it is aimed at young girls mainly because they are likely to believe anything that the publishes put in the magazine. All of the faces that the celebrities are happy, giving off the impression that the celebrities way of life is relaxing and enjoyable and it also gives the magazine a positive image, this would encourage a parent to buy it for their child. They have a variety of colours for the backgrounds and subtitles so it can be suitable for a rang of different people.
A-We can tell that the audience for this magazine is young/teenage girls. This is because of the colour scheme, very bright, vivid and colours that could be associated with girls. The arrange of people also gives the audience away as they are people that young girls are more likely to be interested in (One Direction) and again they are talking about things that most likely young girls would be interested in (boys and fashion). The way the pull quotes and titles are worded means that this magazine is suitable for young girls as it is not too complicated and the content is clean and fun. It is attractive to the audience because it has everything that they are currently interested in, all in one magazine. It also isn't too much information to take in as the wording is quite simple, but doesn't have a lack of information for a young girl.
R- The representation for the celebrities featured in this magazine is through the use of bold and italic fonts. Bold implying that they have confident, out going characters but the italics could also imply that they aren't boring and have something about them. The background colour of blue could also represent how they are interested in what everyone young adult male is interested in, showing that even though they are famous, they believe that inside they are still normal people, this can be easy for the reader to relate to them easier.
Double Page Spread
L- Again the language for the double page spread is legible so it attracts the reader to read this articles. Their names are written in a more italic style above the photograph establishing who is who, and the font type gives a contrast against the rest of the article. Both pull quotes from each interview are relatable to probably every teenage, so again this is going to drag the reader into this audience as they could feel like they are going through the same struggles as One Direction. This can give the reader a sense of relief that not just a normal person, but a celebrity is going through a difficult time within their life. Even though the pull quotes are more negative, we know that, because it is a pop magazine, within the interview Zayn would most likely say how he pulls through things and giving teenagers advice, which is helpful. The whole of both the interviews are based on the difficulties of teenage life and is suitable and helpful to teenagers going to a tough time. It is also good because they can get comfort and support without having to leave their own house. This double page spread could give Zayn and Harry from One Direction a good name as they are portrayed as being normal people and a good role model to children that are younger than them or the same age. It also applies to both male and females, this is because young males can relate to what they are saying and it interest girls purely because they want to know more about One Direction's life.
I-Also on the double page spread there is no reference to the publishing company. This is probably because they interview can be quite emotional as they are talking about their personal life and the problems and the company do not feel like it would appropriate to advertise the company. The interview itself gives the publishing company a good name as Egmont is all about inspiring young children, which this article could.
I- The values and beliefs expressed within this double page spread is that every person is equal no matter what your social status. Most celebrities don't live by this, but I feel like this article is saying that One Direction are different and here to help young children. In their interview they express how they at one point have felt left out and were worried that they couldn't cope with certain things, which I'm sure most young teenagers could relate to. It gives the impression that even though the interview is more on the negative side, that the outcome of this would be positive as it could help improve someones confidence or even their life.
A- The audience for this double page spread is definitely young teenagers, both male and female as both sexes can relate to the content of the article. This is because they are talking about stress within school, relationships or maybe just your own confidence and this all usually occurs when you about the age of 10. Also 1 in 6 young teenagers suffer from anxiety and feeling uncomfortable and not fitting in is quite common, so these high profile celebrities raising awareness that anyone can go through stressful times, is important and magazines should publish more articles like this one. This would definitely catch the attention of readers/buyers more as they are likely to suffer from the same things as what One Direction are.
R- They grey background of the article could represent the seriousness of the interview, that this could be a difficult topic for certain people. The pull out quotes are in large bold writing representing the importance of their message and that people should read it. They have kept to a colour scheme of grey and blue, creating a more sophisticated image. If this was based on a bright pink background, with swirly fonts, you wouldn't take it as seriously or wouldn't believe the content of the interview.
Front Page
L-The masthead follows media conventions by being placed in the top left hand corner. It is a medium size, bold and on a angle which captures the audiences attention. The love heart in the middle also makes the masthead stand out because they have mixed imagery with type, which makes it more interesting and fun for the audience. The selling line 'We Love Pop' makes is easy for the audience to identify the genre of music the magazine is advertising. The pull quotes on this magazine are from the feature stories including Tulisa. She says 'My naughty days are in my past' is suitable for the audience as it is imply that her behavior has changing, setting a good example for a young audience. It is set on a blue background, making the simple white and legible font stand out and easy to read. This could represent the artists' state of mind at the moment (not chaotic like she used to be), making her look like a good role model. On this magazine there are no other pull quotes, leaving you unknown of what the content of the interviews may be like inside. At the bottom and sides of the magazine, there are extra feature stories giving an insight to other stories, which also give more of a reason for the reader to be interested and buy the magazine. The type for more of the stories are quite plain and simple as they wouldn't want to take any of the attention away from the main feature and it's story, although some of the type looks more hand drawn, giving the magazine a more friendly and non-manufactured look.
I-The publishing company for We Love Pop magazine is Egmont and they are a company that sells and publishes magazines and children's books. The say that their mission is to inspire children to read, which is an important factor in a child's life when growing up. The company is very popular with parents and on the website there is a large amount of help provided for parents or their children. There is also provide reads for a variety of ages, starting at pre-school to older reading. The name of the company is located in the bottom right hand corner as it is not important to the young reader. The company Egmont publishes many other magazines including We Love Pop and GoGirl. They also sell a large range of magazines film based such as Barbie, Monsters Inc and Dora the Explorer. Overall the publish and sell 20 different magazines that are created to excite and entertain children. Most of the magazines are targeted for under 7's, but some are for 7 and over and then teens.
I-We Love Pop is music and celebrity magazine that mainly focuses on the pop genre of music but also fashion and the latest celebrity gossip. It focuses on artist that are extremely popular with young/teenage girls for example boy bands, young female artists and X-Factor contestants, that have either been popular for a period of time or have just become successful within pop culture. From my market research I decided that the main audience for this magazine was girls from the age of 8-15, depending of their music choice. On pop magazine, we expect to see young artists, both male and female(In this case, it is One Direction). I think the age of the artist is important because we want them to be suitable and easy to relate to, as it suits a young audience better. The artists on the front cover will usually be posed in a fun and happy way as the One Direction boys are, we can see that they are smiling and having fun. The photos can never have sexual connotations, as it would be inappropriate for children of such a young age. These types of magazines give off a very positive portrayal of celebrities and life in general, hoping that it will make the child happier, more confident and have fun in your childhood years.
A-The audience for We Love Pop and most other pop magazines are young/teenage girls who have an interest in pop music and sometimes fashion and celebrities. I would say the audience for these magazines range from around 8 (this is probably around the age where you start to develop an interest in music and choose what music genre you like, but this can change as you get older or may just stay the same) to around 15 (this is usually the age where your music type might alter a little as it can be influenced if you made new friends). The colour schemes for these magazines definitely suit a young female audience and are attractive to them as they are usually pinks, purples and bright vivid colours and this attracts their attention whilst in a shop and interests them to either buy it themselves or get a parent to buy it for them.
R- The font of this magazine is a good representation as it is bold but varies in font which may imply how the boys in One Direction are all bold characters, but are all different in their own way. Boy bands usually have a quiet one, a moody one, a funny one etc so that they can appeal to a variety of people and keep them interested. The headers 'Gossip, Fashion, Boys; give a representation of a young teenage girls life and for some, are the main key elements, therefore this magazine will appeal to them a lot, as they can relate to the content of the magazine. The main image represents that they are dominant figures within pop culture as they are covering most of the page and are trendy and outgoing, which can be attractive and persuade the reader to buy the magazine.

Market Research
Top 40 Download Chart
These are the Top 3 in the singles download chart. Number 3 is 'Shake It Off' by Taylor Swift, which I would definitely put into the pop genre. Herself and her music have become extremely popular within the last couple of years and has had multiple number 1's with her happy and upbeat pop songs. Her image is very girly and fun and her target audience would be young girls or even teenage girls. I feel that her music is enjoyable and fun, and gives a positive vibe within the music industry.
At number 2, we have Jessie J feat Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj with 'Bang Bang'. Again a very upbeat song. The different vocals within this song make it different and interesting and also can appeal to a larger target audience. This is because Nicki Minaj comes from an R'n'B background, so it gives a variety of voice styles. Jessie J, who is the main focus within this song, varies her style of music quite a lot, going from fast paced songs, to sad, slow songs, but 'Bang Bang' most definitely fits into the pop genre of music.
Finally at number 1, we have the new artist Meghan Trainor with 'All About That Bass'. This song is quite simple in it's backing track, but it's the words that make it catchy and popular. In this song, there is a very simple beat going on in the background and the use of Meghan's voice becomes the tune making it different to others in the charts. I think it is at number 1 also because the artist is new to the charts, which makes everyone want to buy the single to see what she is like.
In the rest of the chart there is a range of different genres including Pop, R'n'B, Dance and acoustic singer/songwriters. I would probably put 'Changing' by Sigma and Paloma Faith in the pop/dance genre, 'Blame' by Calvin Harris and John Newman, 'Comeback' by Ella Eyre and also 'I'm Not The Only One' by Sam Smith.
I worked out that within this download chart, 58% of the content was in the Pop genre, making it the most popular genre of music at this time.
My Music Genre: POP
The music genre that I have chosen for my music magazine is Pop. I specifically chose this genre as it has an extremely large fan base and the Pop music that we listen to, is also played around the world. It is titled 'Pop' because of it's popularity in the music industry.
Some examples of pop culture and their artists are Jessie J and the band One Direction, as they have a large fan base that consists of people all over the globe, making them more popular than certain singers in other genres. Their image is also important to pop culture as well. They normally have a very positive outlook and seem to always look like they are happy and are enjoying what they do, which to a fan and also management, is vital. Especially for female singers, the use of colour within their clothes and artist artwork is useful as it again, gives off a more positive vibe to their audience. If they were doing a more downbeat song, the colours would usually be slightly darker as they want the type of song to link with the colours, which would create a certain theme. The bright colour scheme might not be relevant to male singers in the pop world, as pinks and purples would be stereotyped for females. They also communicate that they are 'Pop' because their songs are most likely going to upbeat, but usually throw one or two sad songs it as well.
The first 'Pop' songs that I could remember where The Spice Girls and usually when asked to think of stereotype of this genre, you would think of The Spice Girls. When they were at their most popular, I think the most important thng about pop culture was definitely the dress code and happy upbeat songs. The way they dressed would probably be very girly, even sporty spice wore glitter and shiny clothes, and could be portrayed as flirty and outgoing. I think this can also be linked into modern pop culture too, as most young singers in the industry dress for the way it looks, and comfort is not important. Also the king of pop Michael Jackson, became the dominant figure within pop culture. He gave large contributions to music, dance, and fashion and also made his personal life very public, which is important in modern pop culture too. His 1982 album 'Thriller' became the best selling album of all time, proving how popular and loved, pop music is all over the world.
